What is good writing? This is not an easy question to answer. Many very different kinds of writing are considered "good" and for many different reasons. There is no formula or program for writing well. However, there are certain qualities that most examples of good writing share. The following is a brief description of five qualities of good writing: focus, development, unity, coherence, and correctness. The qualities described here are especially important for academic and expository writing.

Next, this hypothesis is developed in the development stage. Then, the rebuttal, or the refutal of the main counter argument or arguments. Then, again, development of the rebuttal. This is followed by an example, and ends with a summary. This is a very basic structure, but it gives you a bird-eye-view of how a proper argumentative essay can be built. Many of you have been writing essays for years, and are probably good at it. That's great, and everything you look at here will build on and develop those skills. Now that you have a good understanding of what the academic essay is and how it should be structured, you can start thinking about writing yours. Back to the example we used for the introduction. Depending on what citation format your teacher prefers (MLA format, , etc.), you should include a reference list at the end of your essay, which lists the outside sources where you attained information while creating your paper.
