How to end a poetry comparison essay
This particular essay would consist of two poems, "In Memory of W. B. Yeats" and "Death be not Proud." Both poets, John Gunther and W. H. Auden, are distinguished poets known for the unique way they choose to write. The first poem to be discussed is a modern sonnet by John Gunther. This poem is a reflection of this poet's personal struggle with his lover's imminent death and also functions as a sort of eulogy upon her death. Contradicting the traditional form of a sonnet, this poem has a rather unique rhyming scheme that does not follow any particular pattern. The poem basically talks about how the poet is against calling Death mighty and dreadful or the mightiest and the dreadfullest. Instead, the poet feels that death is rather a peaceful release from the tortures of life and rest from the rest of tired instances. It is compared to a sleep without dreams and is thought to not be so fearful after all because no one has ever woken from it and come back to express disappointment. The second poem I have chosen to talk about is called "Death be not Proud." It is a Shakespearean sonnet. This poem has a much broader scope in its address, trying to defeat Death for all mankind instead of one solitary life. The poet first instructs Death not to be proud because he feels that the power of Death does not compare to the power of life. It is stated that many have called upon Death and this is not something to be proud of because the circumstances in which they did this were unpleasant and forced. The poet also describes Death as a slave and remains in control over Death and can dispose it to do whatever he wishes. The last sestet describes the moment of death as waking eternally from a short sleep and since you will be immortal anyways and never die and gives Death the ultimate insult and says that you will die and Death will be no more. This poem reflects Shakespeare's feelings about death and his Christian religion. This is the simplest answer poem to the ways of death, and that it is to defy it and do not accept it as an answer to anything.
But it’s not always so easy to tell whether an assignment is asking you to include comparison/contrast.
