2024-25 Worcester Polytechnic Institute Supplemental Essay Guide
If you’re looking for further guidance in your essay process, here’s an example of how one student responded to the “Why ?” essay with successful results:
If you’ve started working on supplementary college essays, you may have seen prompts asking you to explain why you’re choosing to apply to that school. For example, asks, “Which aspects of the Tufts undergraduate experience prompt your application? In short, (100–150 words).” “The emphasis on project-based learning at WPI, and especially the student-driven IQP, seem to me an ideal way to learn. In subjects like music and language a student does not just study theory and structure. They play music, speak a language, and create using what they learn. The learning philosophy for other fields should not be any different. Applying learned knowledge makes what you know into what you truly understand. I would love to be able to join in on a community of equally driven peers. Should I have the chance to participate in the dynamic WPI community, I will throw myself with equal enthusiasm into all the opportunities present.” Be specific. Admission officials at most any school, RPI included, will tell you that they like to see “Why us?” essays peppered with specifics about their school—from courses and the professors who lead them to clubs, activities, and research and internship opportunities. That tells them you’ve taken a particular interest in their school—and that you can envision yourself there. One quick/easy way to check if you have enough specifics is to look for capital letters, like the names of courses and programs and clubs, and bold them. This student has 7 examples in his essay, a solid return for a 250-word prompt. WPI focuses on the STEM majors, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. 10% of the students major in management and the Interactive Media and Gaming Development (IMGD) is also popular. It is very collaborative, project-based environment and the kids are very friendly. There is a lot of opportunity to gain real world applications and they encourage students to take risks and experience a lot of different things. As a result, no student will receive less than a C in any class and if he does, the grade will not go onto the student’s transcript. There is no core curriculum and WPI runs on the quarter system, whereby students take three classes per quarter. Renowned for the amount of cross-disciplinary opportunity it provides to undergraduates, WPI provides a similar experience to summer program participants. As such, students “major” in a computer science or engineering-focused area and “minor” in the arts or humanities. For example, in addition to selecting Computer Science: Possibilities in Programming as their major, students can choose from Cinematic Storytelling, Music, or Psychology, among others, as their minor.Computer Science: Possibilities in Programming is perfect for beginners. Since it is self-paced, it’s also perfect for independent learners. Students focus on how programming applies to internet applications and object-oriented languages. Consequently, they dive into topics like HTML, JavaScript, and networking, to name a few. Moreover, students have the opportunity to pursue their topics of interest–instructors tailor the class to student wants and needs.Outside of academics, students spend time with peers and attend social activities (like kickboxing, trivia, and movie nights). They also take part in college preparation workshops. To apply to these well-regarded computer science summer programs, students must submit a short essay, activities list, transcripts, and recommendations. WPI undergrads are "well-rounded students" who "are very involved on campus and live the campus life to the fullest." Many enrollees note that people are "extremely interested in their respective STEM fields but also have incredibly diverse extracurricular interests," which contributes to the "specific vibe" at WPI. That is, when you get on the WPI wavelength, "you feel as if you finally belong somewhere." Everyone "is so warm and inviting to anyone new" and "the sense of community is extremely strong, and students are very supportive and welcoming." And if you find yourself struggling, fellow students "are super willing to help you if you have a tough class." One student captures the spirit of the institution, saying, "The student body at WPI feels like a community of like-minded peers. It is exciting to see what other people achieve, both inside and outside the classroom. Even if you don't know someone, it feels like they're your friend because you know how much hard work they put in to reach their achievements."
