In a pre-print paper, researchers from NASA's Ames Research Center report a concerning statistic: 73.3% of images captured by the SPHEREx telescope last year were contaminated by satellite trails. This issue, once primarily associated with ground telescopes, has now extended to space-based observatories.
The SPHEREx, designed to map the sky in near-infrared light, is particularly vulnerable due to its long exposure times and wide field of view. Even at an altitude of 700 km, it cannot escape the bright trails left by satellite megaconstellations.
The Impact on Science
