I’ve entered my fair share of writing competitions across genres since elementary school. I can’t even estimate the number. Whenever I wrote a good essay, story, or poem, I would hear “you should submit this to a contest!” Adults and peers directed me to competitions since I started putting pen to paper, and I understood it as something writers just...do.
The Center for the Study of Liberal Democracy is pleased to announce its winners for our seventh annual undergraduate essay competition. Each year, students are invited to submit essays on a timely question related to foundational freedoms and responsibilities in liberal democracies. Please direct questions about the Student Essay Competition to the Managing Editors, Beatrice (Bea) Brown () and Deja Morehead (). We look forward to reading your submissions! The Selection Committee will consider all submissions anonymously. Winners will be announced in October 2024. Authors who submit winning Essays commit to publication in the Yale Law Journal Forum and agree to participate in our full editing process. This process involves both structural and substantive suggestions, as well as sourceciting for content and adherence to Bluebook style. The competition is open to all current law students and recent law-school graduates (JDs and LLMs from the Classes of 2022-2027) from any ABA-accredited law school. Each individual may submit only one piece. Submissions must be previously unpublished Essays and may not be submitted to other publications during the competition period. The Yale Law Journal is excited to announce its eighth annual Student Essay Competition. The Journal’s Student Essay Competition challenges the next generation of legal scholars and practitioners to reflect on emerging legal problems. The Competition is open to current law students and recent law-school graduates nationwide. Up to three winners will be awarded a $300 cash prize. Winning submissions will be published in the Yale Law Journal Forum, the Journal’s online component. All Forum Essays are fully searchable and available on LexisNexis, Westlaw, and our website. We anticipate that some students will use the experience of entering the essay competition as evidence of their super-curricular engagement and plan to profile it on their future university applications. With that in mind, this year we are running four essay competitions, aligned to our four university consultancy brands. Whilst all students are welcome to enter, we particularly encourage those who are considering university applications in the following fields to enter the competitions:

Dukes Education has held an annual essay prize since 2015. Open to students 15-17 years old, the prestigious competition provides a platform for students to showcase their academic prowess, creativity, and critical thinking.

Submission Requirements
The contest is open to any student who is both currently enrolled in an accredited medical school (US, Canada, or anywhere in the world) and will be enrolled at the time of the Annual Meeting September 11 - 14, 2024. The work must be an original unpublished essay of 1,000 words or less. Due to an overwhelming response, ONLY ONE SUBMISSION PER STUDENT WILL BE ACCEPTED.
