Are you ready to take on the challenge of writing a great English essay? Writing an effective and coherent essay is one of the most important skills for students who want to excel in academic studies. It requires knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, logical reasoning, and organization. Every essay must start with an introductory paragraph. This first paragraph aims to introduce the reader to the topic of the essay. This paragraph should give context to the arguments the reader will read about. Then, at the end of the paragraph you include your thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay. This purpose of a thesis statement is to communicate the main point you want the reader to learn about this English essay. Without a clear thesis statement, the purpose of your essay will not be clear. Essays are shorter pieces of writing that often require the student to hone a number of skills such as close reading, analysis, comparison and contrast, persuasion, conciseness, clarity, and exposition. As is evidenced by this list of attributes, there is much to be gained by the student who strives to succeed at essay writing. Finally, you have the conclusion, the last paragraph. In the conclusion you give the reader a summary of the information they have read. Do not introduce any new information in the conclusion. Restate the thesis statement, summarize the main points of the essay and give the reader a final comment to remember from this English essay. Though the word essay has come to be understood as a type of writing in Modern English, its origins provide us with some useful insights. The word comes into the English language through the French influence on Middle English; tracing it back further, we find that the French form of the word comes from the Latin verb exigere, which means "to examine, test, or (literally) to drive out." Through the excavation of this ancient word, we are able to unearth the essence of the academic essay: to encourage students to test or examine their ideas concerning a particular topic.
